Course Overview

Learn the fundamentals of pottery on the wheel in this hands-on 4-week beginner course. You'll be guided through essential wheel throwing techniques, from preparing clay and centering to creating functional forms, trimming and finishing your work. By the end of the course, you'll have developed confidence on the wheel and created your own handmade ceramic pieces to keep.

What’s Included

  • 4 x 2.5-hour guided classes (6:00pm - 8:30pm) each Thursday

Week 1 – Preparing Clay & Centering

  • Introduction to the pottery wheel and studio practices

  • Wedging and preparing clay

  • Learning to centre clay on the wheel

  • Understanding wheel control and posture

Week 2 – Coning, Opening & Pulling Walls

  • Coning up and down to prepare clay

  • Opening centered clay

  • Pulling walls and forming cylinders

  • Developing consistency and control

Week 3 – Creating Your Own Forms

  • Refining throwing techniques

  • Exploring cups, bowls, and other functional forms

  • Shaping and altering forms

  • Building confidence through independent practice

  • Trimming foot rings and refining shapes

  • Adding finishing details

  • Introduction to glazing and surface finishes

  • Preparing work for firing

Course Overview

Discover the foundations of ceramic hand building in this beginner-friendly 4-week course. Learn essential techniques including pinch pots, slab building, coiling, texturing and surface decoration while creating your own unique pottery pieces. I will guide you to build confidence working with clay and complete a collection of handmade works to take home.

    • All materials, tools, glazing and firing are included unless otherwise stated.

    • Classes and workshops run on the dates and times listed at the time of booking.

    • Please wear comfortable clothing that can get a little messy and closed-toe shoes.

    • Finished pieces will be available for collection once glazed and fired. Collection times will be advised by the studio.

    • Due to the nature of ceramics, occasional cracking or breakage may occur during the drying and firing process.

    • Missed classes may not be transferable or refundable unless arranged in advance.

    • A minimum number of participants may be required for the course or workshop to proceed.

    • Participants will be notified as early as possible if a session needs to be rescheduled.

    • For BYO events, please drink responsibly and follow all studio guidelines.
